Volunteer veterinarian Carol Hedges of east Texas checks Charley Bejna’s dog Poncho in Wasilla Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2013.
This morning I went to Iditarod Headquarters in Wasilla and photographed the army of volunteer veterinarians at the mandatory vet check. Each dog must be examined by a vet for its fitness to run the race. It was so much fun to watch the vets interacting with the dogs. These sled dogs are some of the friendliest and mellow dogs on the planet and at the same time, some of the greatest athletes. Was great to see the vets taking the tongue licks and all.
Also at the vet check were 76 school teachers who were on a field trip there during the winter teacher conference. Tomorrow is the musher meeting and banquet. 3 days to go !
