History and Information about this location
Even with a population of over 300,000 people, there are many places in Anchorage where there is little or no development. Places like this swamp area which is not suitable for building one can get a sense of the wonder of the outdoors.
The Chugach Mountains, with peaks in the 4,000 – 5,000 ft. elevations, create a stunning backdrop for Anchorage as well as a plethora of adventure for hikers, skiers, parasailers and more. Moose, bear, lynx, bald eagles, rabbit and more abound in the area as well. The Chugach Mountains seen here are within the nearly 500,000 acre Chugach State Park immediately east of Anchorage. Chugach State Park has many entrances providing access for a variety of outdoor activities including the “Glen Alps” trailhead. Glen Alps is the gateway for hikers to summit Flat Top Mountain. Flat Top, at 3,245 feet, is the most climbed mountain in all of Alaska via a 1.5 mile, 1,350’ vertical gain trail.
