What brought you to live in Alaska:

I first came to Alaska in about 1977 because I was working on research ships and tugboats. And I wanted to move away from the busyness of Seattle, and I just wanted to come to Alaska. It was just something I needed to do, and I moved here in 1984. I never looked back.

How has Alaska captured your heart?

Alaska has captured my heart because living in a big city was just not for my soul. So when I moved to Kodiak Island in 1984 and people were asking me right off the bat, “Hey, come have a cup of coffee. Go hiking with me.” I knew I had found home and I just stay here because it’s all about community and helping everybody in their life struggles and joys.

Describe just one of your favorite “Best Days” or  “Most memorable experiences”  in Alaska.

My most memorable experience was just a little while ago, I was going to the library to pick up a book and I saw a bumblebee stranded in a flower. So I put my hand next to it and it must’ve sensed the warmth in my hand and crawled up on it. And I thought, “Uh-oh, I got to go get my library book.” So I went in the library and that bumblebee was on my finger.

And I went up to the counter and I said, “Hey Jess, I need to check out the book that you saved for me.” She goes, “Oh, okay. Sure, Marion.” So she hands me the book and she looks at the bee and she says, “Would you like help out the door with that?” I said, “Sure, thanks.” And I put the bee next to a flower and went home.

What in Life do you know for sure?

What I know for sure in life is that inside we’re all the same. We all have our same issues, really. We’re just trying to get through life, and we just have that spark of spirit in all of us. And I just try to look at that in everybody because that’s what really, really matters.
